Augsburg coach barred from Bundesliga match after leaving team quarantine to buy toothpaste

With the Bundesliga season set to resume on Saturday amid the coronavirus pandemic, strict protocols are being enforced to ensure this weekend’s round of games goes off without a hitch.

Augsburg head coach, Heiko Herrlich, found out the hard way the extent to which officials are determined to see the season resume.

With his side set to take on Wolfsburg on Saturday, Herrlich left his team hotel to go and buy toothpaste.

“I have no toothpaste and then I went to a supermarket,” he said at a news conference.

Teams in Germany’s top two leagues are being housed in hotels ahead of the games with none of the players or staff allowed to leave.

“I made a mistake by leaving the hotel,” Herrlich admitted in a statement.

He will now miss his side’s game on Saturday and will only return to training after two negative COVID-19 tests.

Augsburg said they are constantly testing their staff and players.

“Even though I have followed all hygiene measures both when leaving the hotel and otherwise, I cannot undo this. In this situation, I was not able to act as a role model for my team and the public.

“I will, therefore, be consistent and stand by my mistake. Because of this misconduct, I will not be leading the training [on Friday] and will not be in charge of the team against Wolfsburg on Saturday.”

The Bundesliga will be live on Citi FM with games on Saturday and Sunday.
