“Represent Ghana with pride to win AFCON”- Herve Renard tells Black Stars

2-time AFCON winning coach, Herve Renard, says if Ghana will win another AFCON title, then the national team’s players will have to play with pride and love for the country and give everything.

Renard believes that this is the only Ghana way will end its AFCON trophy drought which has been in existence since 1982.

The Frenchman was with the Black Stars team in 2008 as they reached the semi-finals of that year’s tournament but he went one better and he won the competition with Zambia in 2012 (beating Ghana in the semis) and Cote d’Ivoire in 2015 (going past the Black Stars in a penalty shootout).

In an interview with TV3’s Juliet Bawuah on Saturday May16, Renard gave some insight into how Ghana could join the likes of Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia and Algeria in the circle of AFCON winners in recent years.

“I think Ghana is not far from winning an AFCON title but the players must play for the Ghanaian flag.

They have to be proud of their country. They need to imagine the number of people who stop their regular lives to watch them play either at home or away. This is because in Africa, football is a passion and the team must play for the people.

When I won the AFCON with Zambia, people kept telling me that the team had placed Zambia on the map. It was strange hearing this but I realised how important it was for the fans.

They were so proud of the feat and it was will be the same thing for Ghana. This is how to bring a team together to win the AFCON.”

Ever since losing the final in 1992 to Cote d’Ivoire has made two AFCON finals in 2010 and 2015 but failed to win the trophy after losing 1-0 to Egypt in the 2010 tournament in Angola and 8-7 on penalties to Cote d’Ivoire in the tournament hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
