Baba Rahman has potential to break into Chelsea first team – Marcel Desailly

Former France and Chelsea Legend, Marcel Desailly believes Black Stars defender Baba Rahman, has the potential to become a regular in Chelsea’s first team despite not featuring for the Blues in over three years.

Rahman joined Chelsea from Augsburg in August 2015 and has made only 23 appearances in five years for the club.

Since joining the club in 2015, Rahman has been sent on loan to three different clubs.

In 2016 he was loaned to Schalke 04 after failing to impress then Chelsea Manager, Antonio Conte.  He joined Schalke again for a second loan spell in January 2018 until the summer of 2019.

He rejoined Chelsea but was immediately loaned again to Stade de Reims until the end of the 2018/2019 season. In September 2019, he was sent on loan to newly promoted La Liga side Mallorca in a season long deal.

Desailly however says despite Rahman’s struggles with injuries and inconsistency over the years, the Ghanaian international should not give up on playing as a constant for the London based team.

“Baba Rahman should not give up, I think he has the level to be at Chelsea as a first choice, so he should try more,” Desailly said in an interview with FootballMadeInGhana.com.

“He went out of the country to play in the Spanish league so he has to try and come back with a better mind set to be able to perform.”

Baba Rahman has since returned to Chelsea following the expiration of his loan deal at Mallorca on June 30.
