Budgetary allocation for Youth and Sports Ministry Inadequate – NSA boss

The budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Youth and Sports is vastly inadequate and cannot support the promotion and development of sports in the country, that’s according to the Director General of the National Sports authority.

The Sports Ministry was allocated 40.2 million Ghana Cedis for the 2020 financial year.

But with over 40 sporting disciplines to contend with, the NSA boss says the money is simply not enough.

“Despite the budget amount which is usually mentioned in parliament that also triggers a lot of laughter, the whole Youth and Sports Ministry receives about forty million Ghana Cedis and when converted into dollars is less than five million for the development of Sports,” he explained.

“The Sports fraternity as we speak currently has forty–four federations and associations all promoting and developing sports and promoting it in various disciplines.

“And you can imagine such a budget, even for the ministry alone, that 40 million is nothing to write home about.”

The Sports Ministry, through the YEA, has set aside GHS1.5 million dollars to go directly to paying 1000 athletes 500 Ghana cedis per month for the next 6 months.

500 of the athletes will come from the National Women’s League, 100 from disabled sports and 400 from other national athletes.
