‘We are not afraid of Penalties’ – Lee Addy on Black Stars’ penalty woes

Ghanaian defender Lee Addy has debunked assertions that Ghanaian players have a fear of penalty shootouts.

The senior national team have not won a penalty shootout in the last 3 decades with Addy himself experiencing defeat via penalties at the hands of Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

According to him penalty kicks have always been practised during competitions but believes Ghana have just not been fortunate from the penalty spot.

” We are not afraid of penalties, there are a number of people who are experts in taking penalties, he said on Citi TV’s The Tracker.

“Sometimes during training, we practice taking penalties and we decide on one or two people who are better at it and will deliver when called upon.

“So I don’t think we have a fear of penalties, we only need to have confidence in ourselves.

“It doesn’t mean we are afraid, a time will come where things will change.” He concluded.

The last time the Black Stars won a penalty shootout was in the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations finals where Ghana defeated Libya by 7-6,  to lift the trophy for the 4th time.

Since then however, the Black Stats have suffered penalty heartbreaks, losing AFCON finals from 12 yards in 1992 and 2015.

In 2013, Ghana also got kicked out of the AFCON by Burkina Faso through the shootout while Tunisia did same to the 4-time winners at the 2019 tournament in the Round of 16.
