Chelsea’s signing of Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy is another sign that the Blues mean business this season.
Having signed Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, the west London club added some bite to their attack and also replaced the exiting Willian and Pedro.
The Blues then signed left-back, Ben Chilwell, and centre-back, Thiago Silva, to bolster a leaky defence that conceded 54 goals in the league alone last season.
However, the club’s first two games of the season showed that their biggest problem area had still not been solved.
Goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, bore the brunt of the criticism of Chelsea’s defensive frailties last season, mostly deservedly.
Failing to keep out shots that any average goalie, let alone the most expensive in the history of football, should save easily became a feature of Kepa’s season in the last campaign.
The groans of Chelsea fans any time a shot was fired at their goalkeeper, and almost inevitably ended up in the back of the net, became as frequent as the cheers for the goals scored by their squad.
This returned in their first game of the season where Brighton’s solitary goal in the 3-1 loss to Chelsea came from a shot that squirmed under the dive of Kepa.
It’s official! Edouard Mendy is a Blue! ✍️🔵#WelcomeMendy

His offence was even more grievous against Liverpool a week later, gifting the ball to Sadio Mane who scored Liverpool’s second goal.
Chelsea are attempting to provide some competition for Kepa with the signing of Mendy.
Suffice it to say, Blues fans are overjoyed with the news. A number of people have even gone to the extent of suggesting that Kepa’s days as Chelsea number one might (hopefully for them) be numbered.
One tweet ‘welcomed’ Kepa to Vitesse Arnhem, where Chelsea youngsters deemed not yet ready to make the step to the first team have often been sent out on loan to.
Take a look at some of the best reactions on Twitter:
