Ghana vs Mali: Ofori, Lumor out; Akonnor hands late call ups to Ekuban, Paintsil

Black Stars head coach, CK Akonnor, has handed late call ups to Turkey-based duo of Caleb Ekuban and Joseph Paintsil after a good number of his first team players failed to travel to Turkey for the international friendlies against Mali and Qatar.

Ghana face Mali on Friday October 9, 2020 before facing Qatar on October 12, all in Qatar.

But Akonnor will have to do without the services of goalkeeper Richard Ofori, striker John Antwi and left back Lumor Agbenyenu, who all failed to secure work visas to the European country.

Ajax midfielder, Kudus Mohammed meanwhile sat out Ajax’s league game this past weekend due to injury but the GFA medical team insists he must travel to Turkey for them to do their own assessment.

As  result, Akonnor has drafted in Ekuban, whose last appearance for the Black Stars at the 2019 AFCON where his missed penalty eliminated Ghana in the round of 16 clash against Tunisia.

Paintsil, 22, meanwhile, has been handed a debut call up to the national team. He joined MKE Ankaragücü this summer from Belgian side Genk.
