Kotoko, Hearts, 3 others set to play home matches at Accra Sports Stadium

Accra Sports Stadium

A total of five teams hope to call the Accra Sports Stadium ‘home’ for the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season.

The five clubs, including Kumasi Asante Kotoko, submitted the venue as their preferred home ground for the upcoming season.

Kotoko’s fiercest rivals, Hearts of Oak have called the stadium home for decades and will share the ground with the Kumasi side, once the GFA grants its approval.

The other clubs who have applied to play their home matches at the Accra Sports Stadium are Great Olympics, Inter Allies and Legon Cities who all played at the stadium in the last, unfinished campaign.

The Kumasi-based club ended the last campaign having to play the home games in Accra due to renovation works at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The switch by Kotoko presented a quite unique situation to the Premier League with the schedules having to be tweaked to ensure that none of the five teams had their matches at the same time.

Kotoko recently played at the Accra Sports Stadium when they beat Hearts of Oak 2-1

That looks set to continue next season with all five clubs likely to be granted permission to use the stadium.

Dansoman club Liberty Professionals submitted the Carl Reindorf Park, which courted some controversy, when it was deemed unfit for Premier League games, forcing its closure for a few weeks as the club addressed the issues that had been raised.

A statement from the GFA said the Club Licensing Board would embark an inspection tour of venues from today, Tuesday, October 06, to Friday, October 23, 2020 “to validate that all necessary satisfactory requirements are met and approved for the season.”
