Ryan Giggs bailed again after denying assault

February 27, 2021
in Football, News

Wales manager Ryan Giggs has had his bail extended after denying an allegation of assault.

In November, several newspapers reported he had been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend.

Greater Manchester Police said it was called to reports of a disturbance at an address in Worsley, Salford, just after 22:00 GMT on 1 November.

It said a woman in her 30s “sustained minor injuries but did not require any treatment”.

The force said officers had arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of a section 47 assault and a section 39 common assault and he had been bailed pending further inquiries.

He was rebailed on 20 November.

At the time, Mr Giggs’ representatives said he denied all allegations of assault and was co-operating with police.

Earlier, Greater Manchester Police said a man, now 47, had had his bail extended until 1 May.

A spokesman said: “A file remains with the CPS and a decision is expected in due course.”

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) previously said it was “aware of an alleged incident involving the men’s national team manager Ryan Giggs”.

Giggs, who became Wales’ manager in 2018  is due to lead the squad as they start their bid for Euro 2020 glory – rescheduled because of Covid-19 – with a game against Switzerland on 12 June.

This summer’s European Championship is meant to be staged in 12 different countries across Europe, starting in Rome.

Wales hope to repeat the success of reaching semi-finals of Euro 2016, and even go further.

The squad’s only previous tournament appearance had been at the 1958 World Cup.
