The Ministry of Youth and Sports will have 34 million cedis to use for all its activities for the 2021 calendar year according to the 2021 Budget Statement from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.

Even though the figure disbursed to the Youth and Sports Ministry was not stated in the highlights document that was read to Parliament, the full budget statement, numbering 292 pages, captured the allocation on page 240.

The full amount given to the Youth and Sports Ministry for 2021-GHS 34, 412, 805- represented a drop of GHS 5, 831, 350 from the amount given to the Ministry in 2020. That amount in itself marked another reduction from the 2019 amount of GHS 43, 795, 046.

Allocation breakdown

The Ministry’s allocation for 2021 is made up of the following parts:

Compensation of Employees- GHS 19,250,867

Goods and Services- GHS 12,410,171

CAPEX (which will go into building, purchase and maintenance of the ministry’s fixed assets)- GHS 2,300,000

 Internally Generated Funds: GHS 451,768

What is on the agenda of the Youth and Sports Ministry in 2021?

The Ministry will be looking at some major things this year including:

  • Black Stars’ qualification to the 2021 African Cup of Nations Tournament in Cameroon and the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup Tournament in Qatar;
  • Black Queens preparation and qualification to the WAFU and the African Women’s Cup of Nations Tournaments; and
  • Black Princesses and Black Maidens to their respective World Cup Qualifiers and Tournaments both in 2021.

Aside those, the Ministry is expected to put in more work in order to get Ghana ready for the 2023 Africa Games which it will be hosting. Per the 2021 budget, the Ministry has “secured land and will begin construction of an Olympic Size Sports Complex in the Greater Accra Region.”
