“I am not overlooking Alfred Duncan”: C.K Akonnor defends omission of Cagliari midfielder

Black Stars head coach, Charles Akonnor says the omission of Alfred Duncan in his 30-man squad to face Morocco and Ivory Coast in the June international window does not mean he is being overlooked.

The Cagliari-based defensive midfielder has not been named in any of C. K Akonnor’s team ever since he was appointed as the head coach of the senior national team.

In the 2020/2021 season, Alfred Duncan has played 20 games for the Serie A club, cementing his role as a prominent figure in the Cagliari setup.

When quizzed on the omission by Citi Sports’ Daniel Koranteng, Akonnor said he is aware of the quality of Duncan, but he has to give chances to some local-based players in order to play the kind of football he wants.

“Alfred Duncan is not being overlooked. He was not playing a lot back then, but now he is playing a lot now. We know what he can do, and we are monitoring that.”

He has not been in the country in a while, and we know we can still rely on him. He is not here now, but we know what he can bring, but we also have to give the chance to some local-based players and that is why he was not called.

We want to play beautiful football, and we will need to give the chance to players who can help us bring that to the table, but it does not mean Alfred Duncan is being overlooked”.

Ghana is scheduled to play against Morocco on Tuesday, June 8 in Rabat before taking on the Ivory Coast on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Cape Coast stadium.
