Thomas Tuchel signs two-year contract extension after leading Chelsea to UCL glory

The contract of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been extended by two years after he led Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League title last Saturday.

The new deal will see the German remain in charge at Stamford Bridge until 2024.

“I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal. I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family. There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation,” Tuchel said after he signed his new deal.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “When Thomas joined us in January there was still so much to play for domestically and in Europe. He slotted in seamlessly and immediately became an integral part of the Chelsea family. Returning us to the top four in the Premier League was crucial, and we could not be happier with our success in the Champions League which crowned a remarkable season at Chelsea.”

“We are obviously extremely pleased therefore to retain Thomas for a further two years, and look forward to more achievements in the coming seasons.”

Tuchel, who was appointed in January, guided the Blues to their second European Cup against Man City, with compatriot Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the game.

In his thirty matches in charge, the German manager also saw his side reach the FA Cup final and finish in the Premier League’s top four.

Tuchel was handed an 18-month contract when he took over from Frank Lampard but following this weekend’s success, it was pretty clear an extension is imminent.

The manager pretty much confirmed that he had been assured of a new contract after meeting with Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich during the on-pitch celebrations following the Champions League final.

“I am not even 100% sure maybe I have already a new contract now,” Tuchel said afterward.

“My manager said something about it. Let’s check this first. I spoke to the owner right now on the pitch. It was the best moment for the first meeting. It can only get worse! We will speak tomorrow. We will speak later. I will stay hungry for the next title. My desire is for more victories and to grow as a coach. It would be nice to meet him a bit closer. We are in contact. Now it’s nice to meet him.”
