2022 WCQ: CK Akonnor makes seven changes to Ghana XI to face South Africa

Head coach CK Akonnor has made seven changes to the Black Stars team to face South Africa in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Johannesburg on Monday.

The changes were largely influenced by the absence of six key players who did not make the trip to the Southern African nation as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

Amiens midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey takes the place of Baba Iddrisu, who has been dropped. Hearts of Oak captain Fatawu Mohammed starts at right back in the absence of first choice Andy Yiadom; Gideon Mensah takes Baba Rahman’s place on the left side of defense and Jonathan Mensah replaces Daniel Amartey to partner Alexander Djiku.

Yaw Yeboah and Majeed Ashimeru have also been given starting berths to inject creativity in the team, while Joel Fameyeh has been thrown into attack to replace the absent Jordan Ayew.

Andre Ayew leads the attack against the Bafana Bafana.

CK Akonnor’s team defeated Ethiopia 1-0 in their opening game while the South Africans were held 0-0 by Zimbabwe in Harare in their first game.

Kick off for the game is 16:00GMT with live commentary on 97.3 Citi FM.
