2022 WCQ: Black Stars arrive in J’burg without key players for South Africa game

The Black Stars of Ghana have arrived in Johannesburg ahead of the second group game of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa on Monday but the team was without key players due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Although 25 players travelled with the team to South Africa, the team did not have England based quintet, Daniel Amartey (Leicester City), Jeffrey Schlupp (Leicester City), Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace), Andrew Yiadom (Reading FC) and Baba Abdul Rahman (Reading FC) following the decision of Premier League clubs not to allow their players travel to COVID-19 red-listed countries.

Others who missed the trip are Rennes forward Kamal Deen Sulemana and Daniel Kyereh of the German side St. Pauli who have both been recalled by their clubs.

Akonnor and his men will be hoping to make it 2 wins out of two after securing a slim 1-0 win over Ethiopia in Cape Coast on Friday night.

Ghana will hope to get a much better result out of the game after their last encounter with South Africa ended in a 0-0 draw in March.

The team will train at the FNB stadium later today ahead of the game on Monday, September 06, 2021.

Full squad in Camp:

Goalkeepers: Richard Ofori, Richard Atta, Manaf Nurudeen, Lawrence Ati-Zigi

Defenders: Philemon Baffuor, Gideon Mensah, Ismail Ganiyu, Alexander Djiku, Jonathan Mensah, Samuel Ashie Quaye, Joseph Aidoo, Fatawu Mohammed

Midfielders: Mubarak Wakaso, Baba Iddrisu, Emmanuel Lomotey, Majeed Ashimeru, Fatawu Issahaku, Samuel Owusu, Yaw Yeboah

Forwards: Andre Ayew, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Joel Fameyeh, Braydon Manu, Kwame Opoku, Emmanuel Gyasi.
