2022 WCQ: Sheriff Tiraspol reject GFA call up for Edmund Addo

Moldovan giants, Sheriff Tiraspol, has rejected the Ghana Football Association’s call up for midfielder Edmund Addo for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Zimbabwe.

Addo, 21, was handed a late invitation to replace the injured Alfred Duncan in Milovan Rajevac’s 32-man squad for the double-header against the Southern African country.

But Tiraspol deemed the invitation too late, as it did not meet the required minimum 10-day prior notice as prescribed by FIFA and subsequently turned it down.

The GFA’s invitation was sent on September 28, 2021, only eight working days to the Black Stars game against Zimbabwe at the Cape Coast Stadium on October 9, 2021.

Having only joined Tiraspol last summer, Addo has been in imperious form for the Moldovans, playing starring roles in their opening two UEFA Champions League group stage victories against Shakhtar Donetsk and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Ghana will travel to Harare to face Zimbabwe in the return leg on 12th October, 2021, following the first tie in Cape Coast.

Ghana are currently 2nd in Group G of the world cup qualifiers with 3 points, 1 behind leaders South Africa.
