The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to stage a Pan-African football Championship for schools in the next few months.

CAF has said the tournament will be introduced in various schools across the continent and will involve both male and female students.

The body says the tournament is being created as part of efforts to “use the lessons of football to guide growth and development and shape future leaders.”

Ghana is one of six teams in the WAFU Zone B taking part in the first edition of the Championship.

“The vision of the competition is to create a future in football for every boy and girl in Africa with a purpose of exploiting opportunities within the values of football to holistically develop African boys and girls,” the GFA said in a statement.

“The CAF Pan-African Schools Football Championship is part of the new leadership under Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s plan of developing football from a Pan-African point of view from the grassroots, with the goal of fostering a new generation of African youths.”

The Sports Ministry who are partnering with the GFA on Ghana’s participation have constantly expressed their desire to revive interschools sports in the country.

“The 2023 Africa Games offers our country a unique opportunity to revitalize all aspects of our sports, including development, promotion and active organisation of competitions, especially at the lower levels to unearth more talents,” Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif said last year.

“Strengthening the Interschools Games by making it more competitive and exciting, is one of the surest routes towards achieving this, and as sector Minister, I reiterate my commitment to this.”
