GPLwk26: Legon Cities stun Kotoko in Kumasi

April 25, 2022
Reading Time: 1 min read

Leaders Asante Kotoko handed some boost to title rivals Bechem United as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home in a 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 26 fixture Sunday afternoon.

It marked the first time the Porcupine Warriors have suffered back-to-back losses this campaign. Last week, they were beaten 2-1 at RTU.

Midfielder Michel Otou put the visitors ahead after 18 minutes via the penalty spot.

The decision came about after referee Selorm Yao Bless pointed to the spot after adjudging that right-back Christopher Nettey had brought down Legon Cities winger Jonah Attuquaye.

In as many minutes later, the Royals doubled their lead through experienced forward Hans Kwofie.

Losing 2-0, coach Prosper Narteh Ogum was forced into a tactical change with central midfielder Mudasiru Salifu coming in to replace winger Dickson Afoakwa.

The decision soon bore fruit as Salifu managed to pull one back for Kotoko in the 43rd minute.

But just two minutes into the second half, Kwofie restored the two-goal advantage for Cites, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb in the remainder of the game.

Kotoko looked so much in haste to get back into the game thereby spurning some good chances that came their way.

Coach Maxwell Konadu’s Cities, on the other hand, were equally guilty of wasting scoring opportunities but managed to keep their 3-1 lead to the final whistle.

The victory sees Legon Cities leap into 8th position – on same points, 36, with Karela United who play guests to second-placed Bechem United (44 points) in the final fixture of match-day 26 on Monday afternoon.

Asante Kotoko are stuck at the top with 52 points.
