U-17 WAFU Zone B: Black Starlets coach blames late MRI test for Nigeria defeat

Black Starlets head coach, Paa Kwesi Fabin has revealed that a late MRI test is to blame for his team’s disappointing defeat to Nigeria in their opening game of the WAFU B U-17 tournament taking place in Cape Coast.

Ghana’s U-17 side lost 4-2 to the Nigerians on Saturday, leaving them in a difficult position to progress to the next stage.

Fabin says he was forced to field a new team just two weeks before the tournament because 20 of out of his 28 players failed an MRI test.

“I don’t like to make excuses but about three weeks to the tournament the FA President [Kurt Okraku] asked the CAF medical team to do an MRI of our boys; and out of 28, 20 were disqualified.

“So we had to use about 2 and half weeks to build this team. We lost but I believe we’ll come back stronger,” coach Fabin said.

Ghana will take on Togo in their next game and must win to stand a chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

A group stage exit for the Starlets will mean they miss out on qualification for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations which also serves as a qualifying event for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
