AFCON 2023: CAF moves competition to January 2024

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for June/July 2023 in Cote d’Ivoire, will now be played in January/February 2024, the Confederation of African Football has announced.

CAF made the decision on Sunday 3 July, 2022 following an Executive Committee meeting.

There had been concerns about the timing of the competition, with the Ivorian Meteorological Services warning of heavy rainfall in June and July, which could render several of the venues unplayable.

CAF has now resolved to move the 24-team competition by 6 months.

This is the third year in a row CAF’s major competition has been postponed, with the 2019 and 2021 editions also changing times.

AFCON 2023 was only fixed for June/July instead of the usual January/February because of the change in time of the FIFA World Cup, which would take place in Qatar in November/December 2022, only a month before the AFCON would have been set to start.
