The 29-year-old started a second successive Premier League game on Saturday after his £26million move from Sevilla in the summer.

But Carlos was hurt during injury time at the end of the second half and had to be replaced by Calum Chambers with only seconds of the match remaining.

A statement said: “Aston Villa can confirm Diego Carlos has ruptured his Achilles’ tendon.

“The player sustained the injury during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Everton. The player will require surgery and will then begin his rehabilitation programme.”

Asked whether Villa will be making any new signings, manager Steven Gerrard said: “We will have to wait and see the outcome of his injury.”

Villa held on to win the match 2-1 thanks to goals from Danny Ings and second-half substitute Emiliano Buendia.

Everton pulled one back moments after Villa’s second goal when Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net, but the home side held on to register their first win of the season.
