Assistant Black Stars head coach, George Boateng has left his role as Aston Villa U-23 coach to focus on his job with the national team.

The 46-year old said he wants to “concentrate on his role” with Ghana ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Boateng is a member of Ghana’s current technical team led by Otto Addo, who have been contracted to take charge of the Black Stars until December 2022, after helping the team qualify for the World Cup.

“Leaving Aston Villa after 3 wonderful seasons was not an easy decision but having the opportunity to coach my country at the World Cup was too good to turn down,” Boateng wrote on Instagram.

“I have learned so much and I’m grateful for the time spent at this beautiful, amazing club. I want to thank the players, staff and fans for their wonderful support and I wish the club every success in the future.”

“As for now, I will concentrate on my role as the Assistant Coach of Ghana ahead of the World Cup.”

After coaching the U-18 team for a year, the former Netherlands international was appointed as Aston Villa’s U-23 coach in 2020.

He was previously in charge of Kelantan F.C. in Malaysia and Blackburn Rovers U-13.
