Ghana’s Men’s Hockey Team has been denied a famous win against Canada in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The team was enroute to a 1-0 win over Canada (ranked 13th in the world) in the preliminary stage of the Men’s Competition before a last second penalty pulled Canada even to deny Ghana its maiden win in the competition.
Benjamin Kwofie’s 10th minute goal was Ghana’s first in the competition and Ghanaian Goalie Duisberg Offei won the Man of the Match Award after pulling off a string of outstanding saves.
However, a block made by the body and not a stick by a Ghanaian player led to the referee pointing to the penalty spot to set up Keegan Pereira’s equalizer.
Ghana is ranked 36th in the world and is yet to win a game after losing 11-0 to India earlier in the competition; the West African nation plays Wales on Wednesday, August 3.
Wales lost 2-4 to England in a previous game and ranks third in the five team Pool B standings with a win and a loss while Ghana ranks bottom in the Pool with zero wins and a draw in three games.
