Karela United CEO fumes at GPL sponsorship disbursement for clubs

Karela United Football Club’s Chief Executive Officer, Elloeny Amande has branded financial benefits handed to the clubs due to compete in the 2022-2023 BetPawa Ghana Premier League as a “sponsorship that is not for the league”.

He made the fiery statement in an interview with Accra-based Asempa FM earlier on Friday in the aftermath of a meeting between Ghana Premier League Clubs and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Details from the meeting indicate league clubs won’t collectively make up to a third of the annual $2 million sponsorship deal from BetPawa.

The betting company signed a three-year deal worth $6 million in total to be the headline sponsor of the league.

“How much are we [the clubs] getting? How much are we taking from these transactions? Are we going to take all of these monies that come, and put it into administrative cost at the federation level? How do the clubs survive? How do the clubs move forward?”

“There was opposition, we raised our opposition. We told the [GFA] President and his team what we thought should be done but obviously I am not the decision-maker. I can only make my point…I don’t think this sponsorship is for the league. If it were for the league, the bulk of it would be going to the clubs,” he fumed.

One million dollars will go into marketing and promotion of the league annually over a three-year period.

$245,000 will go into administration and officiating of the league, with $300,000 assigned to the construction of a mini stadium and $455,000 going to the clubs.

Each of the 18 clubs due to compete in the upcoming season get to receive a sum of $25, 278.

The new season kicks off on September 9.
