UCL: Mohamed Salah scores fastest hat-trick in Liverpool’s 7-1 win over Rangers

October 13, 2022
Reading Time: 1 min read

Mohamed Salah needed just six minutes and 12 seconds against Rangers to score the Champions League’s fastest hat-trick.

The Liverpool forward was a second-half substitute in the Reds’ 7-1 rout of Rangers, but made up for his lack of playing time by scoring in the 75th, 80th, and 81st minute.

That gives him the new record in Europe’s top tier, taken off of former Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, who scored an eight-minute hat-trick against Dinamo Zagreb in a 7-1 win in 2011.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Raheem Sterling have all managed 11 minute hat-tricks in the competition, but nowhere near as fast as Salah.

Salah was surprisingly dropped to the bench for the game after a below-par start to the season which brought four goals in 11 games to start the campaign, but he quickly made amends.

And the no.11 did it in stunning style, with his first effort a sublime dribble and finish to bag his first, and later a trademark curling left footed effort secured the hat-trick.

Before Salah’s quickfire treble, Roberto Firmino levelled the scores seven minutes after Scott Arfield gave Rangers a shock lead.

Firmino struck again early in the second half before setting up Darwin Nunez on 66 minutes.

Harvey Elliott then rounded off the match with a right-footed effort late on. The result confirms bottom of the table Rangers’ exit from the competition.

It was the club’s heaviest home defeat and joint worst loss, equalling the League Cup final defeat by Celtic at Hampden Park in 1957.
