‘We have lots of quality’ – Mohammed Salisu optimistic about Ghana’s World Cup chances

Defender, Mohammed Salisu has praised the quality of his Black Stars teammates after their dominant win over Switzerland on Thursday.

Salisu scored the first of Ghana’s two goals against the Swiss and was impressive defensively as well, as the Stars kept a clean sheet.

The Southampton centre-back went close to breaking the deadlock in the first half but his effort went over.

He made up for that miss in the second half as he expertly looped a header over Switzerland goalie, Yann Sommer.

Speaking after the match, Salisu said he regretted missing the first-half chance but that only motivated him to find the net in the second half.

“I should have scored a first-half goal but missed it. In my mind, I felt I needed to score when I got the second chance in the second half,” he told Joy Sports.

The Black Stars face Portugal in their opening group game on November 24 before they take on South Korea and Uruguay.

Salisu believes the team has the quality to compete with the world’s best in Qatar but insists focus is key.

“We’re all from different clubs but we have good quality in the team,” he said.

“They are playing at the top level. It’s a young team with good talent. If we focus on our journey, we can do more.”
