World Cup debut was a bitter sweet moment- Tariq Lamptey

Black Stars defender Tariq Lamptey has described his debut World Cup appearance as a bittersweet moment.

The Brighton and Hove Albion right full back featured for Ghana’s Black Stars off the bench in the West African nation’s 2-3 loss to Portugal in the final game of the first round of fixtures at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Lamptey came off the bench in the 66th minute to replace Alidu Seidu in the game that had Ghana become the first African nation to register a goal in this year’s World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana Football Association Head of Communications, Henry Asante Twum, the former Chelsea player wished for a win to bookmark the special moment.

“I think it’s a proud moment for both me and my family and I thank God for the opportunity I was given but ultimately the result wasn’t what we wanted…it was a bitter sweet moment. I was proud to make my World Cup debut; grateful to be given the chance but I would have liked the team to have obviously got a positive result and it would have been fantastic all around” he stated.

Lamptey committed to play international football for Ghana earlier this year and is in line to play in Ghana’s next Group H game against South Korea on Monday, November 28 at 13:00 GMT.
