PELE AND ABEDI PELE

Ghanaian football legend, Abedi Ayew Pele has expressed his heartfelt remark at the passing of Pele as he described him as “the greatest footballer to ever play the game”.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento who made a global name for himself as a footballing great died on Thursday, December 29, 2022, after battling a long illness.

Although the nickname “Pele” was a mockery in school for do Nascimento mispronouncing “Bile”- a goalkeeper of Vasco da Gama, it will be remembered for the impact that the three-time World Cup winner made across the globe.

As an attacking midfielder, Abedi was known for his close control, dribbling, passing, speed, and goal-scoring prowess that he was nicknamed after the Brazilian great.

In 2004 during the 100th anniversary of FIFA, Pele named Abedi Pele in his list of “125 greatest living footballers” to mark the occasion.

The two “Peles” have always shared mutual admiration and respect for each other.

STATEMENT BY ABEDI ‘PELE’ AYEW ON THE PASSING OF FOOTBALL GREAT PELE

It is with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of my friend and mentor, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the greatest footballer to ever play the game.

Pele, as he was affectionately known, was a global icon who symbolised the beautiful game of football. He inspired millions of generational kids in his native Brazil and across the globe.

Personally, I was immensely inspired by his greatness, and to be likened to him and bear his iconic name throughout my playing time and beyond, is an absolute privilege and a priceless honour.

Pele is synonymous with football, and football will never forget its king.

Rest well, my mentor!
