2023 CHAN: Algeria books place in semis; to face winner of Ghana-Niger tie

2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN) host Algeria, has booked its place in the semifinals of the tournament eligible to players competing in national leagues on the African continent.

Algeria beat Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers to become the first nation to make it to the semifinals.

The North African nation plays the winner of the Ghana-Niger tie that takes place on Saturday, January 28 at 19:00 GMT.

Black Galaxies lost 0-1 to Niger at the 2011 CHAN and Ghana is aiming to make its third appearance in the CHAN final.

Striker Aimen Mahious converted a penalty kick in added on time after getting fouled by Ivorian defender Aziz Siahone in the penalty box.

The game was fairly balanced as both nations missed good chances in the face of playing the better part of the contest with 10 men apiece.

Algerian goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz was sent off in the 19th minute for committing a dangerous tackle on Ivory Coast’s Aziz Abdoul. Guendouz was named the Best Goalkeeper in the Group Stage.

In the 34th minute, left full back Kouassi Attohoula was dismissed for an equally dangerous tackle on Youcef Laouafi.

The semifinal games come off on January 31.
