Connecting with new signings Kamaldeen and Onuachu has been easy – Southampton Coach

Interim Southampton head coach Ruben Selles says interacting with Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana and Paul Onuachu has been easy.

Sulemana and Onuachu were late signings in the January transfer window from Stade Rennes and KRC Genk respectively.

Selles said this after taking over head coaching duties in the wake of Nathan Jones’ dismissal following a 1-2 loss to Wolves despite playing long stretches of the game with a numerical advantage.

Asked how his relationship with players signed under Jones have been since being named head coach, Selles indicated his conversations with Kamaldeen and Paul Onuachu have been “easy” partly due to their shared background in the Danish top flight.

He also added, “That was an easy conversation to tell them what to expect. I know they were attached with Nathan because he was in the process of picking them up…It has not been difficult. It has been more touch related; that’s what we need from you and that’s where we see now and possibly in the future.”

Selles served as an assistant coach at FC Copenhagen at a time Onuachu played with FC Midtjylland and Sulemana played for Nordsjaelland. Selles termed the shared background as an “advantage”.

In his debut game, Selles’ side ended up beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a shock 1-0 win.

Sulemana competed with Ghana’s Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
