Ghanaian defender Denis Odoi was denied his debut UEFA Champions League goal in Club Brugge’s 0-2 loss in the Round of 16 stage to Portuguese side Benfica.

Brugge lost the first of two legs against the former Champions League winners after conceding in the 51st and 88th minute respectively with goals coming from Joao Mario and David Neres.

Black Stars defender Odoi started the game in midfield and lasted 65 minutes before getting replaced by Casper Nielsen. This was his sixth appearance in the competition.

However, the 34 year old scored in the first half connecting on a free kick but his goal was canceled after he was ruled offside.

The former Fulham player was on Anderlecht’s roster in the Belgian side’s 2012-2013 UEFA Champions League run but wasn’t featured in any of the six games the team played.

This season, Odoi has featured in six out of seven Champions League games for Brugge; he missed out on Brugge’s final group stage game against Bayer Leverkusen due to suspension from an accumulation of yellow cards.

Fellow Ghana international Kamal Sowah played 79 minutes in the loss to Benfica.
