EPL: Tottenham beat Chelsea to heap more misery on Graham Potter

GRAHAM POTTER

GRAHAM POTTER

Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to earn their first Premier League win over the Blues at their new ground and pile the pressure on Graham Potter.

The opening half brought little in the way of chances.

Chelsea started the better but lost veteran defender Thiago Silva to an apparent knee injury midway through the half and seemed to surrender the initiative.

Spurs grew into the match from there but while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hit the post for Spurs and Joao Felix snapped at two half-chances, the most significant moment came just before half-time.

That was the farcical coming-together of Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Richarlison and Emerson Royal, which resulted in three yellow cards and red card for Ziyech, the latter reduced to a caution after a VAR review.

Virtually from the kick-off in the second half, Spurs were in front.

Tottenham played right through Chelsea’s defence and the ball fell to Emerson who shot straight at Kepa. The Spanish keeper parried the shot and it was hacked clear but only as far as Spurs midfielder Oliver Skipp.

Skipp chested it down before firing home from range to give his side a spectacular lead. It was Spurs’ first goal in this fixture since moving to their new stadium.

Chelsea began to push numbers forward, opening space for Tottenham to counter-attack. The match was open and both sides had their chances. Spurs reacted by sending on Heung-Min Son, a master of exploiting space in behind.

As a result, Richarlison moved to the right and shortly afterwards won a corner.

Son sent it in, Dier headed on and Kane hooked it home from close range to double Spurs’ lead. It was Kane’s eighth against Chelsea, and took him to at least 20 goals for the ninth consecutive season.

The victory continues Spurs’ strong recent run, while making it consecutive defeats for Chelsea who remain mired in mid-table.
