Ghana’s National Men’s Football team, the Black Stars, recorded a 1-0 win over Angola in the first of two 2023 AFCON qualifiers and head coach of the team, Chris Hughton, believes his team deserved the win.
Striker Antoine Semenyo came off the bench to score the winner by poaching on a loose ball in the penalty box and smashing it into the net in added on time.
While many fans gathered at the Baba Yara Stadium expressed frustration over the languid win, Hughton was adamant his team did enough to deserve three points.
“If you perform well enough, you have a chance of winning. If you score the goals particularly early in the game, you can take pressure off yourself. In the end, I think we deserved it, out of the two teams… I think we were better than Angola. Not so much more but I think we were better” Hughton said in the post game presser.
In his first game after being appointed Black Stars head coach, Hughton made bold calls in his selection by not having captain Andre Ayew feature in the game and starting Edmund Addo ahead of RC Lens midfielder Salis Samed.

Ghana maintains its lead atop standings in Group E thanks to the win and takes on Angola in the second leg on Monday, March 27 in Luanda.
