Don’t use CHAN failure to justify local players’ ‘no-show’ in Black Stars – Olympics Coach

Accra Great Olympics head coach, Bismark Kobby Mensah has called for handlers of Ghana’s Men’s Football team to have a quota system to ensure players competing in the Ghana Premier League get picked to play for the Black Stars.

He said this in the aftermath of Chris Hughton naming a 25-man squad to face Angola in a 2023 AFCON two-legged tie against Angola, with the first tie taking place at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

No player competing in the betPawa Ghana Premier League was called up to the squad and many have cited Ghana’s poor showing at this year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) as the sticking point.

Ghana’s Black Galaxies played poorly and lost 0-2 to Niger in the quarterfinals in the tournament eligible to only players competing in national leagues in Africa.

Mensah, however says disappointments happen and the CHAN performance should be not be overemphasized.

“Disappointments will always be there, but it doesn’t take the good qualities away from players. I think that there should be a policy that maybe 5% of the players should come from the local league. You can’t call a Black Stars squad without any local player; it doesn’t speak well of the league. It doesn’t encourage the local players” he said. (Click highlighted text to watch interview)
