The 24-year-old Hurts has become the best paid player in the history of the NFL after agreeing the terms, which was announced Monday.
The Eagles confirmed the landmark news in a tweet on Monday morning, saying: ‘Keeping the main thing in Philly. We’ve agreed to terms with Jalen Hurts on a 5-year extension through the 2028 season.’
He will have a guaranteed $180m in the deal and around $15m a season in incentives, according to NFL Network.
His new deal also apparently includes a no-trade clause, which would be the first in Eagles history.
Hurts led the Eagles to the Super Bowl last season but they were beaten by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The $255m deal eclipses the overall value paid by the Cleveland Browns for Deshaun Watson last year at $230m, although that contract is fully guaranteed.
Hurts’ most recent season was his best, despite tasting Super Bowl defeat – Hurts completed 66.5% of his passes for 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, plus another 760 yards and 13 TDs rushing.
