Communications Director of Medeama, Patrick Akoto says the club is determined to make Ghanaians proud in the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League.

The Tarkwa-based club secured Ghana’s only spot in the Inter-club competition after winning this season’s Betpawa Premier League for the first time.

This will be Medeama’s first season in the CAF Champions League, although the club has featured in the 2014 and 2016 CAF Confederations Cup.

The Yellow and Mauves narrowly missed out on the Money Zone in 2014 following a penalty shootout heartbreak to Congo’s AC Leopards at the play-off round.

However, Medeama eliminated Al-Ittihad Tripoli of Libya, Sudan’s Al Ahly Shendi, and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa to qualify for the 2016 CAF Confederations Cup Group stage, where they finished 3rd in Group A.

During an interview with Citi Sports, Patrick Akoto mentioned that they are making progress in strengthening their team for the African competition.

“We are extremely happy.

There’s a lot of room for improvement we need to look at this squad properly, as we venture into the Africa campaign.

This club is a work in progress.

And we hope to make Ghanaians proud when we venture into Africa.”

Medeama are set to return to their favourite home grounds, the TNA Park after adopting the Akoon Park in 2019.

The newly constructed stadium is estimated to cost $6million.

“We will be moving into our newly constructed 12,000-seater stadium funded by Goldfields for the Africa campaign and subsequently for the league campaign.”, Akoto said.

“The venue is almost ready. It is ready before the Africa campaign.

I do know that CAF officials will be in town in the next two or three weeks for inspection and all that.

We have already begun to work and I can tell you that we are looking for a replacement, looking for quality addition, looking for augmentation has already started in earnest and some big boys will join the club because welcome.”

The 2023–24 CAF Champions League is scheduled to start in August 2023 with the qualifying rounds.
