GFA opposes King Faisal’s plea at CAS to suspend their GPL relegation

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has lodged an objection against King Faisal’s appeal for their relegation from the Ghana Premier League to be suspended until a final verdict is reached by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

The Kumasi-based club finished 17th in the previous season and are seeking justice following the dismissal of their protest by the GFA’s Appeals Committee.

Their protest was against Tamale City, who finished above King Faisal, for fielding an ineligible player, Isaac Mensah, who was also registered under the name Kojo Jireh Nissi during a league match at the Aliu Mahama Stadium on May 6, 2023.

The GFA’s defense statement to CAS, filed on 24th July 2023, argues that King Faisal have failed to provide substantial evidence indicating that relegation would cause severe and irreversible harm to the club.

Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, the GFA pushed for a prompt hearing by CAS to determine the case based on its true merits.

Furthermore, the GFA has expressed no objection to the matter being referred to a sole arbitrator for resolution but is unable to cover the advance cost for the ongoing legal dispute with King Faisal at CAS.

As a result, the GFA is urging King Faisal to bear the entire expense of the proceedings.

However, the football governing body maintains its commitment to fulfilling any financial obligations if directed by the arbitrator at the conclusion of the case.
