The announcement of Mason Mount as a Manchester United player has created a serious buzz on social media in the wake of the former Chelsea player swapping Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford.

The Derby County loanee joins the Red Devils on 60 million pound deal with the deal including five million pounds in add-ons.

Mount’s move to Man United has raised a lot of eyebrows considering the 24 year old is coming off a poor campaign in the 2022-2023 season and has just a year left on his Chelsea deal.

However, what has divided fandom opinion sharply is Mount’s jersey number choice as the England international chose to Man United’s iconic number 7.

The jersey number is synonymous with club legends Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and David Beckham. In recent years, a string of players (Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Antonio Valencia) who aren’t considered club legends have donned the jersey.

Another reason for the sharp split in opinions over Mount’s jersey number is because many Man United fans believed fast rising winger Alejandro Garnacho was a shoo-in to pick up the jersey.
