Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah is in line to play for England’s National Men’s Football Team after getting called up to the Lions.

England head coach Gareth Southgate gave Nketiah his debut call up as the 2020 European finalist prepares to play a 2024 European Championship qualifier against Ukraine and a friendly game against Scotland on September 9 and 12 respectively.

The Arsenal player was touted to be considering playing international football for Ghana despite being born in England. Nketiah is of Ghanaian descent through his parents but has represented England at the Under 21 level.

Nketiah and Chelsea defender Levi Colwill are the players called up to the national team for the first time.

Southgate’s latest call ups have generated a ton of controversy over the selection of Jordan Henderson and the much maligned Harry Maguire.

“It’s an honour to receive my first senior call up. Glory be to God – can’t wait to meet up with the squad!” Nketiah stated on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

The 24 year old has two goals in three games this season and his call up puts Ghana’s chances of having him play for the Black Stars in serious doubt.

The Black Stars take on Central African Republic in the final 2023 AFCON qualifier on September 7 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
