Jude Bellingham equals Cristiano Ronaldo record as fairytale Real Madrid start continues

September 20, 2023
Reading Time: 1 min read

Jude Bellingham’s fairytale start at Real Madrid continued on Wednesday as he netted a last-gasp winner to defeat Union Berlin in their Champions League group stage opener.

Bellingham, who joined the Spanish giants from Borussia Dortmund this summer, now has six goals in six appearances for his new club – bringing six victories in the process.

The England international has taken the club by storm and has already established himself as a superstar in the Spanish capital.

The former Birmingham City ace scored on his La Liga debut for Los Blancos and also found the net in his opening Champions League match.

That puts him into an exclusive club at Real Madrid, which only three other players – including Cristiano Ronaldo – had previously achieved.

Ronaldo – Madrid’s all-time club record goal scorer with a scarcely believable 450 goals in 438 appearances – had netted in each of his club ‘debuts’ in 2009, while playmaker Isco did the same four years later, as did Marco Asensio in 2016.

It was an opportunistic and somewhat fortunate goal for Bellingham against Union Berlin after a Toni Kroos was deflected into his path, directly in front of goal – which he could not miss. It did continue his happy knack of timing his runs into the box and being in the right place at the right time for Los Blancos.

Bellingham made his debut for Madrid in La Liga last month and marked it with a goal, scoring with a close-range volley from a corner kick in a 2–0 away win over Athletic Club Bilbao. He scored then bagged a brace and provided an assist for Vinicius Junior in his second game, a 3–1 away victory against Almeria the following week.
