Ghana 1-2 Cape Verde; Black Stars miss out on victory in third consecutive AFCON opener

For the third time in a row, Ghana’s Black Stars have missed out on a win in its opening game at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

After drawing 2-2 with Benin in the 2019 edition opener and losing 0-1 to Morocco at the 2021 AFCON, Ghana lost 1-2 to Cape Verde in the 2023 edition in Cote D’Ivoire.

The Black Stars conceded a Jamiro Monteiro goal in the 17th minute off a rebound after Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori parried a shot into the San Jose Earthquake player’s path.

Ghana defender Alexander Djiku struck the equalizer in the 56th minute by directing a low header into the corner of the net off a Jordan Ayew corner kick.

However, a potential draw was wiped off after a throw-in threw the Black Stars defensive line off and resulted in Garry Rodrigues slotting the ball into an empty net.

Cape Verde leads Group B with three points ahead of Egypt and Mozambique who played out a 2-2 draw in the other group game.

Ghana plays Egypt next on Thursday, January 18.
