Black Stars winger Joseph Paintsil has apologized to Ghanaians over the Black Stars failure to progress to the second round of the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

The speedy winger made this statement on his X (formerly Twitter) page after Ghana’s elimination from the competition was confirmed following Cameroon’s qualification via a 3-2 win over The Gambia.

Ghana failed to win any of its three games in Group to end its run in the tournament with just two points; this marks Ghana’s second elimination at the group stage of the AFCON in a row.

Paintsil made the headlines for his sharp retort to then Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton’s assertion that the KRC Genk winger looked fatigued at the end of the first half in Ghana’s 2-2 draw with Mozambique. (Click highlighted text to watch video)

Hughton has since been sacked as head coach of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team after the disappointing campaign.

After impressing in Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana’s failure to qualify rocked the former Tema Youth player who wrote on his X page, “Sincere apologies to the good people of Ghana. We are truly sorry for not meeting your expectations. Important lessons to take away from this unforgettable experience.”
