Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has been named as the Man of the Match after excelling in Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in Abidjan.

The Stars lost 1-2 to Cape Verde in its opening game at the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’ Ivoire to wrap up action on Day 2 of the continental championship.

Djiku played a starring role as the Black Stars missed out on a win for the third opening game at the AFCON in a row.

The Fenerbache player scored to level the score at 1-1 in the 56th minute after guiding his header into the net off a corner kick from Jordan Ayew.

Djiku denied thwarted two big chances for Cape Verde with one coming in the second half with the former Strasbourg defender nicking the ball of former Man United forward Bebe’s forward.

Bebe was through on goal after latching on to a poor back pass by Majeed Ashimeru but Djiku’s strong run and tackle killed off the danger.
