Head coach of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team (Black Stars) Chris Hughton has described midfielder Majeed Ashimeru’s substitution as one the technical team “had to make”.
Hughton said this after Ghana blew two leads to draw 2-2 with Egypt in the second Group B game for either nation at the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.
Despite delivering another fine performance, Anderlecht midfielder Ashimeru couldn’t complete the exciting game against The Pharaohs and was replaced by Baba Iddrisu in the 62nd minute.
Many Black Stars were stunned by the decision but the lead trainer of the Black Stars indicated an injury played a role in the change.
“A substitution that we had to make and we will assess him in the morning” Hughton said about Ashimeru’s departure for Iddrisu.
Ghana led 1-0 at the time of the substitution thanks to a fine strike from Man of the Match Award winner Mohammed Kudus but Ghana conceded seven minutes later en route to the draw.
The Black Stars play Mozambique next on Monday, January 22.
