Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has admonished Ghana Premier League clubs to do better for themselves to augment the support they get from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

He said this during his appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz to discuss the poor state of Ghana football after Ghana’s Black Stars got eliminated from AFCON for the second edition in a row in the first round.

Paintsil and former Black Stars teammates Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Samuel Inkoom were present to share their opinions on the state of the sport.

His comments come at a time, the Ghana Premier League is dealing with mass player exodus, chronic financial issues and poor attendance at league games.

“Every year, before the league starts, the GFA provides footballs and money for the clubs but in my time, this wasn’t the case so the clubs must help themselves.”

John Paintsil

“The little you get, use it judiciously. Wherever you can get money to finance the team, you should do it. If the local (based) players are happy, you will see that the players will stay here (in Ghana).”

John Paintsil played at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups for Ghana and spent time in the English Premier League with Fulham and West Ham United.
