Head coach of the Mauritanian National Men’s Football Team, Amir Abdou, has landed on the radar of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as a possible candidate to replace Chris Hughton as Black Stars head coach.

According to Mauritania football expert Lassana Camara, Abdou has attracted interested from nations beyond Ghana following his fine run with Mauritania at the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

Under the guidance of Abdou, Mauritania won its first game at the AFCON and qualified to the round of 16 stage for the first time ever.

Abdou’s work with Mauritania has attracted head coaching interest from Burkina Faso, Algeria and Cote D’Ivoire.

At the 2021 AFCON, Abdou guided Comoros to the round of 16 stage for the first time in the island country’s history. That run included a famous 3-2 win over Ghana at the group stage.

Ghana exited the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire after failing to win a game against Cape Verde, Mozambique and Egypt.

The first round exit marks the second AFCON edition in a row the Black Stars have been eliminated in the group stage.

Following Ghana’s abysmal performance, Chris Hughton was sacked and a five man committee has been set up to name a new Black Stars head coach in 21 days.
