Ashley Owusu picked 33rd overall in 2024 WNBA Draft

Ghanaian-American Point Guard Ashley Owusu has been drafted into the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

The 23 year old was drafted into the professional league with the 33rd overall pick after starring for Penn State University. She played for University of Maryland and Virginia Tech University before transferring to Penn State to see out her college career.

Owusu got drafted by the Dallas Wings in the third round of the draft and was the third player in the draft picked by Dallas Wings.

Dallas drafted Jacy Sheldon with the fifth overall draft pick and Carla Leite with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the draft.

In her lone season at Penn State University, Owusu averaged 17.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 20 games while averaging 27.1 minutes per game.

Owusu is the first Penn State University to get drafted into the WNBA since 2016 and is the 16th player from the University to get drafted. Owusu is of Ghanaian descent through her father and grew up in the US.

She follows in the footsteps of Ghanaian-Canadian player Laeticia Amihere who got drafted eighth overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft by Atlanta Dream.

The 2024 WNBA Draft is headlined by highly rated prospects like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.
