Ghana defender Gideon Mensah is celebrating AJ Auxerre’s return to the French Ligue 1 after winning the French Ligue 2 with a game to spare.
Auxerre got relegated from Ligue 1 to Ligue 2 last season but his side secured a quick return to the top after being crowned champions of the lower division.
Mensah’s side drew goalless in its penultimate game on Friday, May 10 with Amiens to secure 71 points with closest challenger Angers having four points behind with one round of league games to play.
Fellow Black Stars defender, Nicholas Opoku lasted the entire duration of the game for Amiens while Elisha Owusu didn’t feature in the game.
25 year old Mensah was a 78th minute substitute and won two of four ground duels delivering nine of 10 passes accurately. in his 12 minute run out in the contest.
Reacting to Auxerre’s title win, Mensah wrote on his X (formerly Tiwtter) page, “God did his thing as usual. 2023-2024 Ligue 2 Champions.”
In 25 league games this season, Mensah registered two assists but scored no goal; Mensah endured a tough campaign at the 2023 AFCON that Ghana crashed out at the group stage.
