Since gaining promotion to the Ghana Premier League ahead of the 2021-2022 season, Accra Lions Football Club have never beaten Accra Hearts of Oak until May 1, 2024.

This marked the day, Lions beat Hearts 1-0 to clinch its first ever win over the city rival at the Accra Sports Stadium with Ibrahim Issah scoring the winning goal.

The big win moved Lions to third place in the Ghana Premier League standings while Hearts slumped to 12th place after losing four of its last five games.

After bagging a shock 3-2 win over Kumasi Asante Kotoko in Kumasi, beating Hearts represents another giant slaying act for Lions with head coach, Ibrahim Tanko, believing there is always a first.

“I said before the game that there is always a first time and the way we are playing this season, definitely we can beat any team and I congratulate the boys.”

Lions play Aduana Stars next in the league on Monday, May 6 at 15:00 GMT at the Accra Sports Stadium in what has been Lions’ best ever campaign in the Ghanaian top flight.
