Former Black Stars head coach and 1982 AFCON winner with Ghana, James Kwasi Appiah, has led Sudan to qualify to the 2025 AFCON as head coach of the North African nation.

The qualification is a remarkable feat considering Sudan played all its home games at a neutral venue due to an ongoing conflict in the country.

Next year’s AFCON takes place in Morocco and Sudan qualified to compete in the tournament after finishing second in Group F with eight points behind group winners Angola who finished with 14 points.

Ghana and Niger finished in fourth and third place respectively with Ghana failing to win a game in six outings.

Sudan drew goalless with Angola to officially confirm its place in Morocco and marks Sudan’s second AFCON qualification since competing in the 2012 AFCON.

After the game, the former Kumasi Asante Kotoko player was captured in a video celebrating with Ghanaian members of Sudan’s technical team, assistant coach Ignatius Fosu and goalkeeper trainer Eric Amponsah with Ghanaian musician King Paluta’s hit song “Makoma” playing in the background.

Before you talk about Partey and Dede Ayew, note that Kwesi Appiah qualified Sudan to the #AFCON2025. His likely to take the team to the finals following the trajectory of the team.
