Winless Ghana miss out on Afcon for the first time in two decades

Ghana has failed to qualify for Afcon 2025 after a 1 – 1 draw against Angola with a game to spare in the qualifiers.

Despite an uninspiring campaign thus far, the Black Stars led by head coach Otto Addo were thrown a lifeline when Niger against all odds thrashed Sudan 4 – 0 to blow a Group F that looked like a forgone conclusion wide open.

Ghanaian spirits were lifted when Jordan Ayew fired home a long range free kick to hand the Black Stars the lead in the 18th minute.

Regardless of Ghana’s lone goal lead Angola still managed to carve out the more quality chances despite looking inert for long spells of the first half.

The home team spared the blushes of the Black Stars again after Mbala Nzola missed from the penalty spot in the 27th minute.

The Palancas Negras looked a more spirited side in the second half and were rewarded with an equalizer a little after the hour mark when Zini headed in a cross from close range.

The result means that Ghana remain winless in the Afcon qualifiers with 3 defeats and 2 draws and are rooted to the bottom of Group F.

Ghana take on Niger next in Accra on Monday, November, 18th 2024.
